Moscow, March 28: Russia said that new submarines will be armed with improved nuclear-tipped cruise missiles, a state-connected news agency reported on Friday.

ITAR-Tass quoted the Defence Ministry as saying that the first in a series of six atomic submarines, the Severodvinsk, will join the Navy in 2011. At least five other submarines of the same type will be built by 2017, it said.

The new hypersonic cruise missiles with increased range are designed to strike "aircraft carriers of the potential enemy if they pose a direct threat to Russia's security," the Ministry said, according to ITAR-Tass. It said the missiles are also capable of hitting land targets.

A Defence Ministry spokesman declined to comment on the report.

Russia has increasingly relied on nuclear weapons to compensate for the decline of its conventional forces.

In December, the chief of the Russian military's general staff, Gen Nikolai Makarov, said Russia will keep its arsenal of tactical nuclear weapons, which he said were necessary to counter a massive NATO advantage in conventional weapons.

Tactical nuclear weapons have a much shorter range compared to strategic nuclear weapons. They are intended for use within a theatre of battle.

The United States and the Soviet Union decided in 1991 to eliminate some of their non-strategic nuclear weapons and withdraw others from duty, including those used by Navy ships.

But in 2006, Russia signalled it no longer intended to abide by that decision when then-Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov said that Russian submarines were carrying tactical nuclear weapons on patrol.

PCB to give Rs 100,000 as medical aid to injured umpire Raza

Lahore, March 28: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced a medical aid of 100,000 rupees for umpire Ahsan Raza, who was critically injured in the terror attack on Sri Lankan cricketers earlier this month.

“Raza will get 100,000 rupees compensation along with a stipend of 25,000 rupees per month for one year, while all his medical expenses will be borne by the PCB,” a PCB spokesperson was quoted as saying.

Raza was seriously injured when the van he was traveling-in along with Australian umpire Simon Taufel and Pakistani umpire Nadeem Ghauri, was sprayed with bullets during a terror attack targeted at the Sri Lankan cricketers.

He had undergone two surgeries to repair a collapsed right lung and a damaged liver after being hit by bullets during the terror attack.

The PCB has also announced a compensation of 500,000 rupees for the family of driver
Zafar Khan, who was killed in the attack.

New Delhi, March 28: With BJP candidate from Pilibhit Varun Gandhi courting arrest over his recent hate speeches, the saffron party on Saturday termed it as an "act as per the law".

The party's reaction came after Congress leader Kapil Sibal alleged that Varun Gandhi courting arrest in Pilibhit was a pre-planned drama.

Pak mosque bombing toll rises to 70

As grief stricken relatives and residents buried the victims, the death toll from the bloody suicide bombing of a mosque in northwestern Pakistan on Saturday rose to 70, an official said.

The toll rose as more bodies were dug out from the rubble of the blast which shattered the mosque and some of the victim succumbed to their injuries in hospital.

The bomber struck at the mosque in Jamrud in the Khyber tribal region on Friday when it was packed with over 300 worshippers who had gathered for Friday prayers.

The blast was so powerful that the mosque caved in, with many people being trapped in the rubble.

Tariq Hayat Khan, the Political Agent of the semi-autonomous Khyber Agency, told reporters today that the attack had killed 70 people, including 23 personnel of the paramilitary Frontier Corps and Khasadar militia.

Over 130 people were injured, 30 of them seriously, local officials said. Many of the injured are still admitted in hospitals in Jamrud and Peshawar, the capital of the North West Frontier Province. Authorities in Jamrud have detained two suspects for questioning in connection with the bombing.

Bangladesh asks Malaysia to restore migrant workers' visas

Dhaka, March 28 : Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Dipu Moni Saturday urged Malaysian authorities to reconsider the cancellation of visas for more than 55,000 Bangladeshi workers, officials said.

Moni met Malaysian International Trade and Industry Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin bin Mohd in Kuala Lumpur as part of Bangladesh's diplomatic efforts to protect its overseas labour markets, said a release issued by its embassy in Malaysia.

"Kuala Lumpur assured Dhaka of all possible cooperation to end the crisis" without offering guarantees, the release said.

Moni argued that Bangladeshi employees, who are generally engaged in low-end jobs, do not compete with local Malaysian workers.

Malaysia is the second-largest destination for Bangladeshi workers - with about 450,000 employed there - after Saudi Arabia.

Bangladesh earned nearly $9 billion in 2008 in remittances sent by workers abroad. The central bank suggested the government look for alternative manpower markets as the global crisis would likely hurt the flow of remittances

Yassin, who was expected to become Malaysia's new deputy prime minister, said that increased investment
with Bangladesh would be one of his priorities.

The Bangladesh foreign minister also met with retiring Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Haji Ahmad Badawi and his successor, Deputy Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak.

The 25-year-old Belgian retired from the sport two years ago to get married and have a baby but has opted to make her comeback at the Cincinnati Open in August.

"It will be great for the game to have such a great sportswoman back," world number one Williams told reporters.

"She is so nice, it will be good to have her around. She was so fit and she is young so I don't think she will have problems."

Clijsters, the 2005 US Open champion, walked away from tennis while ranked fourth in the world after being plagued by a number of injuries during the latter stages of her career.

During her absence the WTA has addressed some of the issues that pushed her into early retirement, including shortening the season and reducing the number of tournaments that top players have to compete in.

The changes should help Clijsters to combine her tennis commitments with those of being a mother to 13-month-old Jada.

"I am delighted one of our great champions ... will be returning to professional tennis and the WTA Tour this year," WTA chief Larry Scott said in a statement.

"Kim was an extremely popular player both with the fans and other players and it will be great to see her competitive spirit come alive again on court."

Anand slipped a bit in the blindfold game after attaining a winning position, but soon regained form during his return rapid game.

The blindfold game between Anand and Radjabov could have been a very fine victory for the world champion if the former had not marred his efforts by squandering a winning position and complicating the task.

White played the opening in exemplary manner, fully exploiting a number of black inaccuracies.

"Radjabov must have misplayed it somewhere. I got too many good things at the same time," said Anand.

At first sight it looked that he went astray on the 37th move but in fact his next move was the real mistake. Anand was still winning, but things could have been so much easier.

Immediately after the game he ordered a big glass of water to quench his thirst and sighed. "But in the end I got there anyway."

Hamilton: Winning the first Test is just the beginning and India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni now wants to clinch the three-match cricket series against New Zealand as a gift for senior members Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid.

Under Dhoni, India ended a 33-year drought today by winning their first Test here since the eight-wicket victory by the Sunil Gavaskar-led side in 1976.

According to him, India played session by session and their 241-run first innings lead made all the difference in the match.

"It is all about winning session after session and not about winning a day`s play or a few sessions. When it came to bowling or batting, we were right there on top of our game. Asif refuses to refund legal-aid fee to PCB

Karachi:-Controversial pacer Mohammad Asif, who is serving a one-year ban for failing a dope test during the Indian Premier League, has refused to pay the around Rs seven million legal aid fee that the Pakistan Cricket Board has sought from him.

The PCB slapped the bill on Asif saying the money was spent on hiring a top law firm and other expenses of the board officials, who went to Dubai last year to help the cricketer during his 19-day detention there.

Asif, however, insisted he was never consulted by anyone about hiring the law firm in Dubai.

"The board official only came to see me once or twice during my 19 day detention in Dubai and he didn`t ask me about my views on hiring the law firm," Asif said.

Asif was detained by Dubai authorities while on way to Pakistan after playing for Delhi Daredevils in the IPL, as 0.24 grams of opium was found in his wallet.

The cricketer, however, repeatedly claimed he didn`t know the substance, which was prescribed to him by a local hakeem for an elbow problem, was contraband.

The PCB has been demanding the money from Asif since last year when they suspended the pacer from all cricket activities in July. The IPL drugs inquiry also banned him for one-year, which will end in September this year.

The PCB had sent its human resources director Nadeem Akram to Dubai to assist Asif and he has since been sacked.

Asif said he was already facing financial problems since the board had paid him nothing since last year because of the ban

"I would just ask the board to sympathetically consider my position because I can`t pay such a huge bill," he said.

Sydney : A glittering ceremony marked the beginning of the ICC Women`s World Cup Cricket championship, which is being held under the aegis of International Cricket Council this year for the first time, at the iconic Luna Park here on Thursday.

Cricket Australia Chairman and ICC director Jack Clarke launched the sixteen-day tournament, participated by eight countries including defending champions Australia, besides India and England.

"We look forward to the tournament showcasing women`s cricket around the world. We hope that the staging of this event will further accelerate Cricket Australia`s vision for women`s cricket in this country.”

"The ICC wants cricket to be a genuinely global sport and to achieve that goal cricket has to be a genuine global sport for girls and women, we as well as boys and men," Clarke said.

All the participants were photographed together in the shadow of famous Sydney Opera House. Players and officials were then ferried to the main venue, Luna Park for an official welcome function, hosted by former Australia cricketer Ian Healy, an ICC release said.

"This will be an exciting event which will take women`s cricket to new heights and will hopefully produce role models. I know the competitors are extremely excited and so is the ICC as it the first time this event is being staged under our umbrella.”

"It has only been four years since women`s cricket came under the ICC`s control but its rapid growth since that time can be gauged from the fact that from 15 members playing the sport in 2005, we now have 78 members who are involved in some form of women`s and girls` cricket," ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat said on the occasion.

India will now travel to Bowral where they will take on arch-rival Pakistan in the opening encounter on Saturday, while two-time champion England will take on Sri Lanka in Canberra on the same day.

"Women bear and care for our children. In much of the world they plant the crops that feed us. They weave the fabric of our societies," he said. "Violence against women is thus an attack on all of us, on the foundation of our civilization."

He added that violence against women is an "abomination" and stands against everything in the UN charter.

The secretary-general, who last year launched a global campaign called "Unite to End Violence Against Women", cited statistics of one in five women worldwide suffering from rape or attempted rape, while in some nations, up to one in three women are beaten or abused.

He recently visited the Democratic Republic of Congo, where at a hospital, he met an 18-year-old woman who had been brutally and violently abused by four soldiers at gunpoint.

Not only is she bearing physical injuries, "she also bears the curse of stigma", having been shunned by her family and village "from a false sense of shame", Ban said.

"The consequences of violence go beyond the visible and immediate," he said, adding that death, injury, medical costs and lost employment are only a small facet of the larger problem.

He also underscored the importance of men speaking out against the scourge, teaching each other that "real men don't hit women, let alone rape them".

He appealed for greater cooperation to end violence against women, emphasising that "the time to change is now".

After the years of scandal and seclusion, is this the beginning of the rehabilitation of Michael Jackson?

Stepping through the red curtains at the O2 arena in London to the hysterical screams of his loyal fans, the King of Pop almost seemed like his old self once more.

There were broad smiles, sparkling silver and jewels adorning his black jacket, and waves and peace signs for his army of followers.

There was no mask over the face, no trace of the supposed "flesh-eating bug" and no sign of the Michael Jackson who looked frail while shuffling into court in his pyjamas during his child abuse trial and deluded as he danced on a car.

His appearance to announce 10 dates at the O2 in the summer was a day that some thought would never come.

Given his past behaviour, there was a suspicion that he might fly into London, feel a bit funny and get straight back on the next plane home.

Or that if he did arrive at the O2 announcement at all, that he would hover in the background for 20 seconds, mumble something incoherent and then disappear again.

In the end, his appearance lasted less than five minutes, and his speech was filled with hesitant pauses.

But that can be put down to the fact that he was too busy grinning as he surveyed his fans, listening to their screams of support and making various gestures in response.

"I love you. I really do," he told them. "You have to know that. I love you so much. Really. From the bottom of my heart."

It was a far cry from a two-hour stage show, but it was a start.

He did not break into song, but he looked fit enough to persuade most fans to want to part with their cash.

There may have been fewer fans queuing up here than there would have been 10 years ago, but the hardcore are still as fervent as ever.

New music

Some wore his face on their T-shirts or jackets, while a few had their hair and make-up inspired by different Jackson eras.

There was even one lookalike who was so convincing that when he tried to leave the area, he was mobbed by TV crews and fans thinking it was the man himself on an impromptu walkabout.

If this is the start of the rehabilitation of Michael Jackson, what will be the end result?

It is probable that the initial 10 announced concerts will become more, and if they go well he is likely to take the show to other venues around the world.

He is also thinking about new music, movies and possibly other ventures as part of a new "relationship" with promoters AEG Live, which could be worth more than $400m (£283m) to him over three-and-a-half years.

That should be enough to keep even Michael Jackson in jewel-encrusted jackets for the foreseeable future.

But he will never again create music as great as he did in his glory days, and his forthcoming shows - however many he plays, wherever he plays them - are to be his last.

At least that is the plan.

Clinton call conference for Afghan meeting

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has called for a high-level conference on Afghanistan at the end of March.

Solutions to the situation in Afghanistan can only be found if the countries involved, including Iran, meet, she said.

Mrs Clinton was speaking at a meeting of Nato foreign ministers in Brussels, where the alliance agreed to resume high-level contacts with Russia.

She will meet Sergei Lavrov, her Russian counterpart, later on Friday.

Russia welcomed the Nato decision, which comes six months after it froze contacts over the conflict between Russia and Georgia.

Afghan challenge

Mrs Clinton stressed Afghanistan, which she called "Nato's biggest military challenge", was a concern for both Russia and the West.

"If we move forward with such a meeting, it is expected that Iran would be invited as a neighbour of Afghanistan," she said.

French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said that he hoped Iran would attend such a meeting, but noted that Tehran had failed to attend recent French talks on Afghanistan.

"I hope Iran will be here this time," said Mr Kouchner.

BBC diplomatic correspondent Jonathan Marcus says Nato remains central to the trans-Atlantic relationship but it is facing a critical challenge in Afghanistan, where failure could call into question its whole credibility.

'Fresh start'

On Friday, Mrs Clinton will hold talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

The US is hoping that Russia will help secure new and safer supply lines for Nato troops in Afghanistan. Russia's help is also crucial in engaging Iran and curbing its nuclear plans.

"We can and must find ways to work constructively with Russia where we share areas of common interest, including helping the people of Afghanistan," said Mrs Clinton.

But UK Foreign Secretary David Miliband told the BBC that it was not "business as usual" with Moscow.

He said "the invasion of Georgia and continuing infringement of its sovereignty" could not be "swept under the carpet".

If it was Chennai captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni's idea to make Mohali's ace batsman Shaun Marsh think differently, his plan to have Muttiah Muralitharan open the bowling attack worked to the tee. While the offie himself did not do any damage in the first over, the Mohali batsmen were clearly taken by surprise and under pressure to break free from Murali’s shackles fell to Makhaya Ntini, Manpreet Gony and Albie Morkel, getting restricted to 112 for eight.

And Chennai set up a Sunday date with Jaipur in the final by overhauling the Mohali total and winning the second semifinal by nine wickets here on Saturday.

The relatively low target did not really challenge the Chennai batsmen. Opener Parthiv Patel and number three batsman Suresh Raina added 102 runs for the third wicket and ensured there would be no surprises after the innings break. Chennai reached home in 14.5 overs. Raina looked on song and even hit James Hopes out of the ground with a ferocious pull. Parthiv, on the other hand, was judicious.

To begin with, it was a good toss to lose for Chennai. Mohali captain Yuvraj Singh elected to bat, possibly influenced by Friday's semifinal where Delhi wilted under the pressure of a big Jaipur total. But the seaming conditions at the Wankhede Stadium were exploited well by Ntini and Gony. And unlike Jaipur, Mohali could not come up with a big total.

Muralitharan opens bowling

As the Chennai players took field, it came as a surprise to the crowd and possibly to the facing batsman Marsh himself to see the Murali walking up to the umpire, handing over his cap and asking for the ball. The first ball was smoothly driven to the cover boundary and the over was confidently negotiated. Although Muralitharan was taken off, he had sowed enough doubts in the openers’ minds. The regular seamers continued and reaped a rich harvest thereafter. Murali returned in the 11th over and accounted for Piyush Chawla who he got with the one tossed up that straightened.

Marsh subdued

But for the drive off the first ball of the innings and a near perfect straight drive off Ntini, Marsh did not really look like the player who has dominated the tournament. He got a six off Ntini but it was a top edge of a pull that flew high over 'keeper's head. His second pull in the over took an inside edge and went past the stumps to the boundary.

The wickets falling at the other end seemed to have put the Aussie under pressure. Particularly the dismissal of Yuvraj. With runs drying up, Yuvraj went for big shots. And when Gony sent down a short one in the fourth over, he went on his back foot and pulled it powerfully only to see Muralitharan pluck the ball from the air at widish mid on. Marsh followed, playing Ntini on to his stumps.

Reckless shots

The rest of the Mohali batsmen looked out of sorts. Kumar Sangakkara did an Adam Gilchrist by walking. He tried to drive a ball angled away by Gony and possibly edged it. Parthiv did not even appeal when he caught the ball. Gony too was not sure. But the batsman walked. Ntini and Gony bowled good spells and got their basics right. They could get bounce off the track and utilised whatever little movement the pitch provided.

Pakistan is a ‘no-go zone’

Melbourne, March 04: Champion former Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne has declared Pakistan a no-go zone, saying that the safety of players and officials should be of paramount importance.

"I can`t believe this has happened. This is an absolute tragedy," he said. "It`s terrible.”

“People have been killed and I just hope that those who have been injured are all OK. Our hearts and thoughts are with those people,” he added.

"Unfortunately, I think this rules out the Aussies playing in Pakistan now and for a very long time. It is just not worth taking the risk, full stop. I think this is just a commonsense approach. Any tours to Pakistan, now or in the future, can`t even be looked at," Warne said

International Cricket Council president David Morgan said Pakistan cannot host international cricket unless it dramatically improves security.

"In the current situation it clearly is a very dangerous place," Morgan said.

Asked about plans for the World Cup, due to be played in four Indian subcontinent countries, Morgan said: "Things will have to change dramatically in Pakistan if any of the games are to be staged there."

"I think that international cricket in Pakistan is out of the question until there is a very significant change, a regime change I guess," he added.

Former Australian fast bowler and Pakistan coach Geoff Lawson reluctantly agreed.

After years of campaigning for teams to tour Pakistan he now admits the nation will become the Wanderers XI of international cricket.

"It was an honest belief we held (that sporting teams would not be terrorist targets), and it is tragic that this has happened. I have been looking at the footage on TV and I know that area very well. I have a lot of friends over there . . .”

"Cricket won`t be played in Pakistan for the foreseeable future. Pakistan look like they will become a wandering cricket team now.”

"Obviously, there is no chance of the Champions Trophy or the World Cup going ahead."

Pakistan was to be the joint host of the 2011 World Cup with India and Sri Lanka.

Former Pakistan great Inzamam-ul-Haq feared the worst when he told Pakistan television: "The World Cup (in 2011), too, might be affected. No country would want to come now to Pakistan.”

"I am worried where Pakistan will get a chance to play, not only in Pakistan but outside as well. This is all so sad."

Former Test batsman Rameez Raja said that he heard the blast and the commotion after it.

"I never thought we will face a situation like this in Pakistan where sportspeople will be targets," he said. "We have to get united and fight the terrorists. Time for staying quiet is over."

Former Australian paceman Jason Gillespie declared the cricketing world could boycott touring Pakistan forever.

"I`m guessing there`s all these cricketers around the world, and I bet there`s some Sri Lankan cricketers in Lahore at the moment, who are saying: I`m never coming back to this place again," he said.

"And they are justified in saying so."

Victorian captain Cameron White said that he was not shocked by the terrorist attack on the Sri Lanka team in Pakistan.

"It doesn`t come as an absolute shock. On one of the Australia A trips I played on in Pakistan we had quite a few bombs go off close to where we were out for dinner one night.”

Confined women want change [western NEPAL]

In the darkness, a 10-day-old baby boy wails.

It is midday, but the infant has not been allowed out of this special room, separate from the rest of the house, since being brought home after birth.

Only his young mother, Basanti Devi Bhul, can touch him.

She goes out a little but cannot touch anybody else because until the 11th day after the birth, society considers her to be unclean.

"I'm not doing any work," she tells the BBC.

"I just eat dry bread, green vegetables and rice - no lentils or meat. I can't touch any pots or pans or go into the main house. I just go out to wash myself and my clothes, that's all."

This practice of confinement, known as chhaupadi, extends also to women during their monthly period.

Some sort of confinement during menstruation is common in this and other societies. But here in western Nepal it takes extreme forms, with a woman sometimes restricted to a dirty cow-shed or other special huts.

Extreme confinement was outlawed by Nepal's Supreme Court three years ago, but continues to be widespread.

Custom defended

The room where Basanti Devi rocks her baby is musty, airless and dark.

Out in the yard her relatives and neighbours can be heard laughing. To get into her room, we have come in through an outer shed, where logs and wooden ploughs lie piled, into a very dark inner shed where there is just a single stream of light coming in from the door.

"I wish I were more free to roam around," she says. "I wish someone else could come and look after my child when he cries. I wish the system could be abolished."

The village of Dil, where she lives, is a steep two-hour climb from the road which snakes through these hills.

It is a place with breathtaking views and closely packed houses of clay or stone. On the walls hang banners in support of the Maoists, the former rebels now leading the government.

Every house here practices the chhaupadi system. It is a tradition that Basanti Devi's mother-in-law, Durga Devi Sarki, defends.

"Our god will be angry if we don't do this," she says. "She is a nursing mother so how can she cook? Everyone around here does this, so we do, too.

"If she eats normal food she'll get sick."

In another village we met a similarly confined young mother, Padma Devi Deuba.

"I believe that if I take my child outside he will be sick and God will be angry," she says. "It is quite difficult, but it is our system."

It is the same when she has her period. "I can't go inside or cook anything for five days," she says.

"If I touch anyone, it will be a sin." But there is an uneasiness in her. She believes in it; yet she, too, says she would like it eradicated

Pakistan target India to regain Asia Cup hockey

Karachi, Mar 01: Pakistan are confident of their performance in the Asia Cup hockey starting in May but feel they will face tough competition from defending champions India.

In a bid to qualify for the 2010 World Cup, Pakistan will be targeting India in this May's Asia Cup to be played in Dubai.

New Pakistan coach Shahid Ali Khan said on Friday that he sees India as the main hurdle in his quest to help the Greenshirts regain the Asia Cup crown and qualify for the next year's World Cup in India.

"For us India will be the team to beat in Dubai," said Shahid, a Olympian who has been entrusted with the responsibility to help Pakistan win the Asia Cup to be played at the Dubai Sports City May 8-15.

The Asia Cup-winning team will earn a direct slot in the 2010 World Cup. India as the host country has already qualified for the biennial spectacle.

Shahid said South Korea is also a tough side but added the Koreans could be affected a lot by the extreme heat in Dubai in May. "If we play well, we can win the Asia Cup," he said. "I believe it will be a three team race with Pakistan, India and Korea vying for the title. We can beat Korea but India could prove to be tough opponents," he stressed.

Before the Asia Cup, Pakistan and India will meet in the five-nation Sultan Azlan Shah Cup to be held in Malaysia in April. Former champions Pakistan, ranked number eight in the world, will join New Zealand (world No 7), India (11), Malaysia (15) and Egypt (20) in the Azlan Shah Cup to be played April 6-12.

Meanwhile, seasoned defender Zeeshan Ashraf is all set to return as Pakistan captain in the Azlan Shah Cup.

Ashraf led Pakistan in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing last August but was 'rested' for the four-nation Hamburg Masters in Germany - Pakistan's last international assignment. Striker Shakeel Abbasi was appointed as captain for the Hamburg quadrangular last October. Zeeshan was included in a list of 40 odd players selected in the preliminary squad for the Azlan Shah Cup.

He is one of the seniormost players in the pool and is all set to be recalled in the national team that will be selected after trials next month.

Also in contention for captaincy is former skipper Muhammad Saqlain, who has impressed team officials with his fitness during the ongoing camp.

The provisional squad for the Ipoh assignment is currently preparing for the tournament at the National Stadium in Lahore.

New Delhi, Mar 01: Indian Davis Cup team leaves tonight for Chinese Taipei to take on the hosts in the second round tie of the Asia/Oceania Group I, beginning from March 6.

India got a bye in the first round while Chinese Taipei had stunned Kazakhstan in their first round.

It will be a first meeting for the two teams, who are bidding for a place in the final round, the winners of which will qualify for the World Group I play-offs.

Somdev Devvarman and Rohan Bopanna will play in the singles while star pair of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi will take care of doubles challenge.

Mar 01: Martin Whitmarsh took over from Ron Dennis as McLaren team principal on Sunday with the immediate task of helping Lewis Hamilton become the first British driver to retain the Formula One title.

"I've been trying for 20 years to win races and championships, but I have to say I feel an extra zing this time," he said.

"I want my first win as team principal and my first world championship more than I realised. And I certainly don't want to be the man who fails to deliver the championship for Lewis Hamilton."

Dennis announced at the launch of the new McLaren MP4-24 car in January that he would stand down as principal on March 1 after 28 years in the role.

The 61-year-old Briton will continue as McLaren's executive chairman, among other responsibilities, and has said he has no thought of retirement.

Former team chief executive Whitmarsh has been at McLaren since 1989, when they had Brazilian Ayrton Senna and Frenchman Alain Prost as their formidable lineup.

Since his arrival at the Woking factory, the Mercedes-powered team have won four constructors' championships and six drivers' titles including Hamilton's first last year.

"Ron and I have common views, but I am not an identikit of him," he said. "On the fundamental issues of how to go motor racing we are very similar in how we approach things."

Whitmarsh said Hamilton, who beat Ferrari's Felipe Massa to the title by a single point in the Brazilian season-ender in November, had been "battle-hardened like no other driver.

"He just wants to prove he can become a multiple world champion, but there is no longer the pressure there was on him until he won the title at the last race of last season," he added.

"If you sit with him now, you do sense someone who has the confidence of being world champion."

The season starts in Australia on March 29.

Dhaka, Feb 24: Bangladesh on Tuesday sought intensified cooperation among the South Asian countries to fight terrorism, saying the Mumbai attacks showed that terrorists were "very good" in forming trans-national linkages.

Foreign Minister Dipu Moni said that nothing short of the expected mutual partnership would enable South Asia to effectively face the growing menace of terrorism.

"We in Bangladesh strongly believe it (terrorism) can't be dealt individually in isolation," she told a conference of security experts and officials of South Asian nations here.

Moni said the terror attacks in Mumbai taught the region a lesson that there was a growing need for regional cooperation as terrorists "are very good in forming transnational linkages and partnership".

But, she said, that intelligence agencies of the South Asian countries "unfortunately" lacked cooperation.

"The time has come for governments, law enforcement and intelligence agencies, counter-terrorism research community ... to come together and form forceful and active trans-national and trans-regional linkages," Moni said.

Dhaka-based Bangladesh Institute of Peace and Security Studies (BIPSS) organised the two-day meet on Counter- Terrorism Strategy for South Asia to develop a network of government functionaries and independent security think tanks in the region.

Representatives from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka and several western nations joined the conference at which they would present two papers each.

The participants included Directors of the influential United Service Institute of India, which was founded in 1870, and Pakistan Institute for Peace Studies.

Moni said Bangladesh was committed to tackling any form of terrorism as the country was facing a "long term" problem of radicalisation resulting in terrorist or extremist attacks but "we want to do it closely with our partners in the region".

The conference at the non-government or track II level came as the new government in Bangladesh initiated a move to form a regional task force in line with its election manifesto to fight terrorism through intensified cooperation among the countries of the region.

Later, Moni told reporters that the proposal was tabled before the regional countries while modalities of the proposed forum could be fixed after consultations among the South Asian nations.

"I admire the determined move of the Tibetans, inside and outside Tibet, not to indulge in celebratory activities during this New Year," he said in a statement.

According to the Tibetan lunar calendar, Losar is the first day of the year. Traditionally, it is celebrated in a big way.

However, the Nobel laureate extended his greetings to the Tibetans on the occasion.

"On the occasion of the Earth-Ox New Year of the 17th Rabjung cycle in the Tibetan Royal Year 2136, I would like to greet all the Tibetans. I pray that there be peace and prosperity and that our just cause may see gradual resolution," he said.

Tibet's government-in-exile, which is based here, said more than 219 people were killed and 1,294 injured in the subsequent Chinese crackdown.
